The following transfers and promotions will take place on the 12th instant Acting Sergeant Harvey Number 2 Division to be Sergeant at 30/4d per week and to be transferred to Number 6 Division vice PC William Johnson to Number 2 Division vice Sergeant George Morgan Superannuated.
Sergeant Tew Number 6 Division to be transferred to Number 5 Division vice Sergeant Robert Nicholson resigned.
PC OKell Number 1 Division to be Acting Sergeant and be transferred to Number 2 Division vice promotion to Sergeant of PC Harvey.
PC Heap Number 6 Division to be Acting Sergeant vice promotion to Sergeant of Acting Sergeant Thomas Casson.
Acting Sergeant Casson Number 6 Division to be Sergeant at 30/4d per week.
On the recommendation of the Chief Constable the following officers will be discharged on a Superannuation allowance on the 12th instant
Sergeant Morgan Number 2 Division £40 per annum, PC James Fullerton Number 4 Division £35 per annum. PC James Schofield Number 3 Division £25 per annum.
Sergeant Andrew McCallen Number 6 Division is reduced to the rank and pay of a Constable at 28/- per week in consequence of repeated acts of drunkenness and the Chief Constable much regrets that a man of education and police ability should this ruin his prospects.
PC Twiss Number 4 Division will receive increase in pay to 25/8d per week for clever capture of thieves after a long pursuit.

Acting Sergeant Gunn, Number 2 Division to be Sergeant vice reduction of Sergeant McCallen to Constable and transferred to Number 5 Division vice resignation of Sergeant Nicholson.
PC Shaw Number 8 Division to be Acting Sergeant vice promotion of Acting Sergeant Gunn and to be transferred to Number 2 Division.

PC Stockman Number 2 Division will receive increase in pay to 24/6d per week from the 13th instant inclusive.

PC Moss Number 3 Division will receive increase of pay to 25/8d per week from the 13th instant.
Chief Constables Office, Chester 17th January 1877
Acting Sergeant Downes and PC Stevens Number 7 Division having been convicted and find by the Justices for using unnecessary violence to a prisoner the former is reduced to the rank and pay of a Constable and PC Stevens is reprimanded and will be removed to Crewe. Sergeant Wood also who sought to compromise the offence by payment of money is deprived of his Merit Badge for same.

Habitual Criminals
A Register of the above persons liberated between the passing of the 'The Habitual Criminal Act 1869' and the 31st March 1876, and who are subject to the penalties of the 8th clause of that Act, on the 7th and 8th Clauses of the' The prevention of Crimes Act 1871' being now kept at this office Superintendents will in future in the first instance apply to the Chief Constable on the usual form for information respecting the antecedents of persons in custody suspected to have been previously convicted.

All the Officers detailed in General Order 11th April 1876 will again attend Saighton Steeple Chases at 11am on the 10th proximo, white gloves and helmets to be worn.

The Chief Constable finds so much odium incurred by the police in cases against Publicans, in reference to General Order of the 2nd instant relating to Public House cases, please read "by an increasing difficulty of conviction" instead of "With" and after same according by and increasing difficulty of conviction from the rampant perjury produced in defence that he begs Superintendents to give directions only to bring forward the very strongest possible cases.
PC James Harrison Number 5 Division will receive the Merit Badge with pay of 2d per diem from the 5th instant for Long and Meritorious Service. The following transfers will take place on such dates as may be arranged Sergeant Hone from Number 7 to Number 9 Division and Sergeant Naylor from Number 9 to Number 7 Division.

Now that the Right Honourable The Secretary of State Home Department has given his decision and opinion on the case submitted to him from Knutsford. The Chief Constable takes the earliest opportunity of expressing his own opinion that after hearing the reason assigned by the police therefore the use of handcuffs on Yarwood he can see nothing to justify it, because Yarwood was of known residence and unlikely to attempt to escape or be rescued and he therefore cautions the polices as desired by the Home Secretary against resorting to the use of handcuffs in future unless when really required for the purpose of restraint, or. For safe custody.
PC Shaw Number 7 Division is dismissed the force for neglect of duty.

Inspector Morris Number 4 Division is appointed Acting Superintendent of the Borough of Crewe, including the L&NW Railway Company Works, the Railway Station, Goods Yard and the Township of Church Coppenhall and will specially attend to all police duties there, giving also every attention to the Borough Authorities and reporting as usual to Superintendent Saxton at Nantwich.

Superintendents will carry out the directions of the Quarter Sessions as required in the following Order of Court. At the General Quarter Sessions of the Peace Holder at Knutsford on the 15th October 1877. A letter was laid before the Court from the Home Office as to the employment of the County Police as Superior Officers under Section 75 of the Explosive Act 1875. Ordered that Superintendents of police are appointed under Section 75 of the Explosives Act 1875 for the purpose of carrying into effect the provisions of that Section. Signed Thomas Roberts, Dep. PC McCallen Number 6 Division to be Acting Sergeant.

In consequence of the lamented death at 3am on the 28th November 1877 of Captain Smith, the duties of the Constabulary will be carried on by Captain Arrowsmith, the Deputy Chief Constable, to whom all official letters, usually sent to the Chief Constable will be address to Head Quarters. As a last mark of respect to the late Chief Constable, the deputy Chief Constable wishes all the Superintendents to attend at this office at 9am on Monday next (Monday 3rd November 1877) in plain clothes to walk after him to the grave.

In consequence of the very Gallant Conduct of Inspector Hindley and the police under his charge on the 8th instant (Saturday) at Wallasey, which prevented a most serious riot, the Deputy Chief Constable has much pleasure in signifying his approval by directing that Inspector Hindley to receive the extra special duty allowance of 5/- and the Constables engaged one days ordinary allowance and trusts their Exemplary Conduct in the performance of a most critical duty will act as a stimulus to all members of the force.

PC's Clutton and Cartwright of Number 4 Division are dismissed the force for being absent from duty and associating with improper characters the former is also fined 20/- for making improper overtures to a female prisoner in the Cells at Crewe Station.
PC Britton Number 7 Division is awarded the Merit Badge and pay of 2d per diem together with two days extra special duty allowance for Gallant Conduct in pursuing and arresting after receiving three shots from a Revolver, a man charged with Felony at Hyde.
