The Constabulary must understand that the voice of the public against intemperance necessitates a strongest suppression of it in the police. Sergeant McCallen is an intelligent and well conducted officer of Long Service otherwise; he would have been reduced to the rank and pay of a Constable. Chief Constables Office, Chester 3rd January 1873 Superintendents will take every opportunity of making known the fact that eligible men are wanted for the Cheshire Constabulary. Chief Constables Office, Chester 9th January 1873 Sergeant Roche of Number 6 Division is promoted to Merit Class Sergeant with Badge and 2d per diem. PC Reece is awarded 5/- extra Special Duty Allowance for the clever capture during night duty. Chief Constables Office, Chester 18th January 1873 PC Gibson of Number 2 Division having most improperly corresponded direct with the Commissioner of the Police of the Metropolis and on matters not of a criminal police nature is reprimanded and the Constabulary are cautioned that the Chief Constable will not allow the Cheshire Constabulary to undertake duties of a "private enquiry officer" and Constables must invariably correspond with public offices through their Superintendents or through this office. Chief Constables Office, Chester 25th January 1873 Adulteration of Food Act 1872. On the 26th November 1872 the Court of Quarter Sessions having appointed Inspectors of Weights and Measures to be the officers to carry out the provisions of the act, these officers will at once commence such duties and personally deliver any samples or articles of food, drink etc they may procure or receive from others to the analyst appointed by the Court Viz, Dr. Campbell Brown, Royal Infirmary, Liverpool, and in the event of any proceedings be taken they will be prepared to prove to the Justices that the sample or article was delivered to the analyst in the same condition as it was when received from the seller or purchaser. Inspectors purchasing articles as provided in Clause 6 will at time of purchase give the seller warning that the articles will be sent for analysis or take any other steps they think desirable. A Quarterly Return of all persons proceeded against, Fees received and Expenses incurred, will be sent to this office, the first account to be rendered on the 25th of March next. The large Placards sent per rail will always be kept posted up at each police station and other conspicuous places where they can be easily seen and read by the public. Chief Constables Office, Chester 25th February 1873 Mid Cheshire Election Saturday next the 1st March being the nomination day for Mid-Cheshire Election at Knutsford, Superintendent Steen will assemble there at 11am, two Sergeants and 12 Constables of his Division, to remain in the near Court House until 3pm and to act on any orders received from the Returning Officer. Captain Arrowsmith and Superintendent Rowbottom will meet the Chief Constable there at 12 noon on that day to receive instructions as to day of election. Chief Constables Office, Chester 27th February 1873 Wild Birds Protection Act Superintendents will direct their officers to carry out the provisions of the above act and they will always keep posted up a copy of the large bills sent per book post at each police station and other conspicuous places where they can be easily seen and read by the public. Chief Constables Office, Chester 3rd March 1873 Mid Cheshire Elections Friday the 7th instant being the Polling day for Mid Cheshire the following arrangements will be carried out. 1st The strength of Police at each Polling Station will be as follows. ALTRINCHAM Superintendent Steen will be in charge with 9 men of his Division and Superintendent Lawton will send a Sergeant and 3 men to assist. KNUTSFORD Superintendent Steen will send a Sergeant and 4 men. LYMM Superintendent Steen will send a Sergeant and 6 men. SALE Superintendent Steen will send Inspector Dale and 8 men. NORTHWICH Superintendent Mayho will be in charge and will attend with 2 Sergeants and 10 men of his Division, Superintendent Rowbottom will send 5 men. MIDDLEWICH Superintendent Wilson will be in charge and will attend with a Sergeant and 3 men, Superintendent Rowbottom will send 2 men. LOWER WHITLEY Superintendent Aston will send a Sergeant and 4 men. 2nd On this day a Reserve under the Deputy Chief Constable will assemble at Sandbach at 10am as follows 1 DCC, 28 men from Number 7 Division, 13 men from 4 Division, 5 men from Number 5 Division and 13 men from Number 9 Division, making 60 men in total. 3rd On the same day and hour at Knutsford will assemble a strength as follows 42 men with Superintendent Egerton of Number 6 Division and a further 5 men from Number 2 Division, making 47 men in total. 4th All Constables for Polling Booths must be present not later than 7.30am on Friday morning. 5th As a rule at each Polling Booth one Constable at the door of entrance and another at the exit door with a Sergeant inside to take orders from the Presiding Officer will be sufficient, the other Constables being kept as a relief or reserve. 6th The Police at the Polling Stations will consider themselves under the orders of the Presiding Officer at each Station and will strictly carry out all orders received from him. 7th Copy of Section 9 and 21 of Parliamentary and Municipal Act will be in possession of the Senior Police Officer at each Station. 8th Helmets and Metropolitan staves will be in use. 9th Superintendents are referred to General Orders of the 4th and 9th November 1868. 10th PC's Southern of Number 3 Division and Williamson from Number 4 Division will attend at Sandbach in plain clothes at 7.30am. 11th As soon after 5pm as the peace of the locality admits the police will return to their several districts. 12th Superintendents will acknowledge receipt of this order. Chief Constables Office, Chester 8th March 1873 The late Constable Green has been Murdered while engaged in the Special Execution of his duty, leaving a Widow in delicate health from Consumption and three children, aged respectively 5, 3 and 1 year, totally un-provided for, and the Chief Constable feels that the Cheshire Constabulary will be anxious to show their regard for the memory of a brother Constable and their deep sympathy for the Widow and Children by commencing a subscription, which the Chief Constable has reason to know will soon be warmly taken up by the officials and the generous public of this County. Each Superintendent will therefore open a list at once with this object. Chief Constables Office, Chester 25th April 1873 The Chief Constable has found in some instances of late that absence from Conference points has not been immediately communicated by Constables to the Sergeant in charge of the Section and by the Sergeant to the Superintendent. This omission of duty must not again occur and the Sergeant or Superintendent must lose no time in ascertaining the cause of such absence and if not satisfactory reporting it to Head Quarters, this order will also apply to Conference points with Constables of other Divisions. The usual extra precautions will be observed of watching roads and railway stations leading to and from Chester from Saturday before the Races until the following Monday.
