X Andrew McCALLENDear Art,Thank you for your enquiry concerning Andrew, youwould be surprised how many enquires we get frompeople who never say please or thank you, butfirst I have to point out a few things. Sadly wedo not have a photograph. I appreciate that youhave his service details but just in case you mayhave missed something I am completing a report. The Cheshire Constabulary was formed in April1857; there are many thousands of records, theseare held by the Cheshire Record Office, Chester. Ias a retired Police officer and voluntary PoliceMuseum Researcher am slowly extracting theserecords. Cheshire Police Officer Enrolment Recordsare held under Reference CJP7 Volumes 1-5. Thesefive volumes are very large and in poor condition, run from 1857-1913; the information which you seekwould therefore be recorded in Volume 1. Theinformation regarding an officer's marriage wouldbe in CJP24/2, 1847-1966 I have also checked thePension's Register CJP20/2/1, 1857-1965, and addedwhat was recorded. I say all this because I wantto try and reassure you that what I give you is asit appears in the respective volumes. If you also read the history of the CheshireConstabulary "To the Best of Our Skill andKnowledge" which is on the Museum Web Site, I feelcertain that a useful picture can be obtained oflife in the force at the time, my own opinion isthat discipline was severe and those who strayedoutside the rules were fined way above what theyearned or dismissed. Also the restrictions ontheir private life, an officer was not allowed todrink on or off duty even in his own home. It allcomes down to the fact that up until the 1960'severy Chief Constable of Cheshire was an exmilitary officer and they of course brought withthem the military codes of practice. I trust youwill enjoy what follows and can I ask you, whenyou get a moment would you send a quick mail so Ican mark of your enquiry as completed.I note that you say that he was discharged fromthe Sandbach Police Force, we do not have himrecorded as being posted in Sandbach, but he musthave been as this is where is first misconductreport is recorded. Sandbach Police Station atthis time was part of the Northwich Division;therefore it would be termed as an officer of theCheshire Constabulary, Northwich Divisionstationed at Sandbach. You will also note that hejoined on the 20 April 1857; in fact he was amember of the old Cheshire force for severalmonths so he was one of the very last members tojoin the old force and one of the very firstofficers of the newly formed CheshireConstabulary. His personal record does not containanything with regard to his siblings, other thanof course his marriage details, which again I haveadded. However, you will portably be aware that heis recorded on the census returns for 1851, 1861,1871, 1881 and 1891, where of course any siblingwill be recorded, if you don't have these recordsplease let me know and I will see what I can do.In 1851, he was unmarried and a Constable inLiverpool. In 1854 he married Mary and ourmarriage records show at the time of the marriagein 1854, he is recorded as a Mariner. We canprobably assume that he had left the LiverpoolPolice after 18 months service and then gone tosea, but nothing is recorded concerning hisservice at sea. It now begs the question of justwhen he served in the Army, as again no definitivedate is recorded in his record. But the entry forhis army service is written after his Policeservice with Liverpool, this tends to suggest thathis service in the army is post 1854, aftermarrying Mary and just before 1856, when he joinedthe Cheshire Constabulary and taking all this intoaccount it would appear that he did not serve verylong in the army. You will no doubt be aware thatthe 89th of Foot (Princess Victoria's) in whichAndrew served, with other amalgamated Irishregiments eventually became in 1968, the RoyalIrish Rangers. I feel certain that there must be aregimental museum that may be able to supply youdetails of where and when Andrew may have served. This may then give you further leads as to hisfamily in Ireland. I also note a William and MaryMcCallen are recorded on the 1841 Census forWoolwich, Kent as serving in foreign climes, maybe this is Andrew's father.Would you be so kind and send a quick mail to sayyou have received this report in order that I canmark off your enquiry as complete. With sincere best wishes Jim Talbot,(Trustee and Researcher for the Museum of Policingin Cheshire).Collar Number/Rank.
